Urban Designer / Planner

Gorrill Palmer is seeking an Urban Designer/Planner to support and strengthen our planning and land development teams.  This individual will assist our Planning Group Leader and will work on planning and development design initiatives for both public and private clients, while also working with all of Gorrill Palmer’s other Groups, including the land development, transportation engineering, transportation planning, and municipal engineering groups.

Gorrill Palmer is a collaborative, multi-disciplinary group of professionals including civil and transportation engineers as well as a growing planning team and focus.  We work with a wide range of public and private clients in the transportation, real estate/development, institutional, and energy industries, as well as local, county, state and federal governments.

Responsibilities 

  • Execute project work that includes the creation of urban and development design plans, transportation streetscape and corridor plans, renderings and visualization graphics, comprehensive master plans, vision plans, and design guidelines
  • Perform and assist in preparing zoning analysis, new or amended land use codes, planning and land use research, housing studies and related planning initiatives
  • Perform and assist in preparing transportation planning initiatives, including bicycle and pedestrian plans, multi-modal transportation plans including transit, and complete street initiatives
  • Prepare and compile development applications, narratives and related submissions, for local, State and Federal permitting processes and planning and transportation applications
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and illustrative graphics
  • Assist and collaborate with Group Leaders and Project Managers on marketing materials for project pursuits along with project and other company updates on the company website
  • Assist the Planning Group Leader and GP Leadership in identifying and implementing innovative and creative approaches to undertaking urban design and planning assignments, including working with new technologies, graphic techniques and communication strategies in overall product delivery across Groups

Skills/Abilities 

  • Team-oriented with the ability to work with the Planning Group leader and a diverse group of other staff and teams, including Transportation Engineering, Land Development, Transportation Planning and Municipal Groups
  • The ability to work in a collaborative and dynamic environment
  • Digital media design skills and software experience including, AutoCad, Photoshop, Sketch-Up, Illustrator, InDesign, PowerPoint and full Microsoft Office Suite. Strong graphic and rendering skills are desired
  • Presentation graphics skills (both hand-drawn and computer-aided)
  • Strong knowledge of urban design and planning best practices
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Collaborative design, planning and problem-solving skills with team partners, clients and project stakeholders

Qualifications 

  • BA in urban design, landscape architecture, planning, or related field (Master Degree is beneficial)
  • 3+ years of urban design, planning and landscape design experience
  • Professional AICP certification and/or CLARB certification is beneficial
  • LEED Certification (or similar) is beneficial
  • Experience with, and interest in, urban design, development, planning, and transportation planning initiatives
  • Public speaking experience
  • Experience working in a collaborative, team environment
