Grant Assistant


Essex County Planning provides services required to implement community development goals for Essex County and their municipalities. Technical assistance is provided by researching, writing and administering grants for upgrades, implementation and, expansion of community facilities. This may include, water and wastewater infrastructure, parks and recreation areas, economic development, and habitat restoration. Assistance also includes issues of historic preservation, housing rehabilitation, Smart Growth implementation, energy efficiency, zoning and comprehensive planning.

We are currently seeking a Grant Assistant. This is a professional position involving the responsibility for researching and developing grant applications. The individual will also help municipalities in the administration of the grant-funded projects.


Research and Develop Grant Applications for potential funding;

May act as liaison between municipalities and funding agencies involved in project implementation and assures that all contracted work is satisfactorily completed according to specifications;

Research and prepare environmental processes;

Assists in the coordination of all personnel: town supervisors, funding agency representatives, contractors, etc., necessary to complete the project;

Assists in preparing reimbursement claims and reporting to funding agencies;

Maintains files, project schedules and reporting on grant activities


Team-Oriented with the ability to work with a diverse group of staff, including an Associate Planner, Community Development Coordinator, Project Management, County Engineers and Environmental Manager. As well as, municipalities and county officials.

The ability to work in a collaborative and dynamic environment

Knowledge to write and develop grant applications

Excellent, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills

Thorough knowledge in computer applications, including spreadsheets, word processing, calendar and email software

Ability to understand and interpret complex oral and written information



  1. A) Graduation from a registered college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Planning or Environmental Science
  2. B) Graduation from a registered college or university with an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration or Social Sciences with two (2) years of experience in preparing acceptable grant documentation; or
  3. C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined in A) and B) above.


$21.29/Hour – Full Time with Benefits including, paid sick, vacation, personal and holidays. Health Insurance, Dental Insurance, New York State and Local Retirement. New York State Disability, Optional Deferred Compensation, Life and Disability Insurance. This position is a union position, and is a member of CSEA Local 1000.
